Having practised as a Consulting Engineer and been fortunate to have worked  with some of the world’s signature Architects I decided to investigate a much earlier period of Architecture. I chose Charles Rennie Mackintosh as his work had always appeared to be distinctive and progressive

My aim was to demonstrate the breadth and diversity of Mackintosh’s interior design in buildings. My work covers the following Buildings:

  • 78, Derngate, Northampton
  • Mackintosh museum and Mackintosh Room at the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow
  • The Hill House, Helensburgh
  • The House for The Art Lover, Glasgow

The Royal Photographic Society awarded me the Associateship of the Society (ARPS) based on 15 images from this Collection

The variety of CRM’s work is overwhelming which is undoubtedly due both to the diverse nature of his clients as well as his determination to produce bespoke solutions.

He exploited natural and artificial lighting to the full. He also paid great attention to detail in creating wonderful spaces utilising striking fabric designs and furniture.

Whilst his work had a continuing magnetic affect on me as I planned and shot my images I became increasingly aware that his design was different to more recognisable forms of modernism which followed. His work bridges the period between the pastiche of the Victorian era and the functionalism of the Modern Movement which by then involved much greater simplicity.

Mackintosh did simplify spaces but he then added embellishment involving intricate details, floral inspired decoration and sometimes curves to form individual spaces. Some of the geometric shapes and patterns make Mackintosh’s work  instantly recognisable today.
